Every year we make loads of resolutions that seem to die out in the first month or so. This year, let's make resolutions and make them stick. Here's five tips to doing so:

#5 - Want it - Figure out what it is you really want and make that your resolution. You don't simply have to make a resolution just because it's new years.

#4 - Get Support or realize where you are not getting support - Changing habits are hard. One of the best things you can do is get the support of your friends, families, or co-workers. It's a lot easier to accomplish something when you have people who are rooting for you to succeed. Likewise, make not of what situations are working against you or not supporting your goal and seek to make necessary changes.

#3 - Don't just have a goal - create a plan - Saying that you want to do something is a good step in the right direction, but actually accomplishing something takes planning. Before New Years map out a plan of exactly how you are going to achieve your resolution. What needs to be changed? What new steps are you going to take? How will you know when you achieve your goal?

#2 - Understand that habits are hard to break - It's called a habit for a reason. Breaking them are not an easy task and are going to take a lot of hard work, especially mentally. As human beings we are creatures of habit and seek comfort in repetition. Keep this in mind and don't get down if you aren't accomplishing your goal as fast as you thought you would - keep at it.

#1 - Be realistic - I've heard a lot of people make some outrageous goals and while I commend them for swinging for the fences - try and be realistic. If your goal is to star in a major motion picture and you've never acted a day in your life, try starting with something smaller first. Resolve to take an acting class, start building an acting resume, and to make connections. You'll be on your way to that larger goal in no time.

See you guys next year!

Episode #10: The Link List

Friday, December 20, 2013

I've got a gaming tourney tonight; I think I'll pregame with one of tonight's cocktails. Even if you're not a gamer and/or off to defend a championship belt tonight (like me), you should still give one or more of these delicious drinks a try. Kick off your weekend like the hottest, most badass superheroine - Wonder Woman.

***

During EP #09, I recommended Wonder Woman and one of our own concoctions, Wonder Woman 2.0.

If you like your drinks light and fruity, try the Wonder Woman cocktail. It's a sweet, tropical delight, no doubt created in honor of Wonder Woman's island homeland.

ABC Television, via Wikimedia Commons
Wonder Woman (according to drinksmixer.com)
  • 2 oz Midori® melon liqueur
  • 2 oz peach schnapps
  • 3 oz orange juice
  • 1 oz pineapple juice
  • 2 oz cranberry juice
Wonder Woman is an Amazonian warrior-princess and as such, we thought she deserved a cocktail that packs a powerful punch (just like she would). So, we created Wonder Woman 2.0; this is not a cocktail for the faint of heart.

Wonder Woman 2.0
  • 1/4 pt Absinthe
  • 1/4 pt dry vermouth
  • 1 pt vodka*
  • 1 pt gin
  • squirt of fresh lemon juice
  • Garnish w/ a cherry
*Note:  I've tried this cocktail with flavored and non-flavored vodka. If you want to go the flavored route, I recommend Stoli® Peachik, Blueberi, or Cranberi.

The Geekery episode was a pretty fun episode for me. I got to learn a lot about a culture that I know a limited amount about. As I was doing research, I repeatedly came across the same point over and over: Geeks are better in bed, and judging from the reasoning I don't see how this can't be true. Here's why:

www.forevergeek.com
#5. They aren't judgmental: They aren't going to tell you that particular lingerie makes your thighs look fat or that you're doing it wrong. Nope this is a judgment free zone. You can sit back, relax, and enjoy yourself with whatever your into - whether it be dressing up as princess Leia, or reenacting that sexy video game scene.

#4. They're into stimuli: They've had a lot of practice with stimuli so giving them something to stimulate shouldn't be that much of a jump, right?

#3. They concentrate: There's no doubt about it. Geeks can concentrate and concentrate HARD. And sometimes, that's half the battle when you're looking to get off.

#2. They're into role play: You'll meet lots of potential partners who have mixed feelings about doing a little role playing. Not geeks. They're free, they're fun, and they can come up with endless scenarios to keep it spicy in the bedroom. (Although some might need a little research to keep up with).

#1. TVP's Resident self-described geek Zoe Grimm. Enough said.

We're doing shots this week at The Vodka Press HQ, to celebrate the end of the work week and the Boston Derby Dames championship bouts on Dec. 14th. Put on your (golden) fezzes and down a shot, or two, in honor of these lovely roller derby ladies.

***

During EP #08, I recommended Dirty Rollie Fingers and one of our own concoctions, Naughty Roller Vixen.

If you prefer sour to sweet, the Dirty Rollie Fingers is the shot for you; it'll leave your mouth tingly and eager for more.

Stacked by dichohecho, on Flickr
Dirty Rollie Fingers (according to www.thespir.it)
  • 1 oz vodka
  • 1 oz pickle brine
  • 1 dash Tabasco® sauce
There are very few drinks worthy of a derby girl. The Naughty Roller Vixen, aside from having a kickass name, packs a sweet, tangy, and boozy punch (to your midsection).

Naughty Roller Vixen
  • 2 pts vodka
  • 1 pt cherry liqueur
  • splash of pomegranate juice
  • squeeze of lime

During EP #07, I recommended the Cuba Libre and one of our own concoctions, Work It Girl.

By Martin Belam [CC-BY-SA-2.0], via Wikimedia Commons
Sometimes I follow the episode's theme when I recommend a traditional cocktail. And sometimes I just recommend something because it tastes good. The Cuba Libre falls into the latter category. White rum and fresh lime juice are the only two ingredients that can make cola drinkable; sometimes I skip the cola or substitute with tonic.

Cuba Libre (according to iba-world.com)
  • 5 cl White Rum
  • 12 cl Cola
  • 1 cl Fresh lime juice

When naming the TVP cocktail this week, I did stick to the theme. Work It Girl is inspired by the lychee-basil-blackberry ice cream my grandmother used to make during summers. Granted, it's not exactly ice cream weather now; but winter's a perfect time to indulge in a tart, tasty cocktail, especially in one that brings me back fond memories of my hard-working, vivacious grandmother. (Στην υγειά σας!)

Work It Girl
To make the basil simple syrup:
  • Combine 1/4 cup granulated sugar and 1/4 cup water in a medium sauce pan.
  • Stir and bring to a boil. When sugar dissolves and the liquid looks clear, add a squirt of lemon juice and 1/2 cup fresh basil leaves, making sure to steep the leaves completely. Turn off the heat and let the mixture sit for approx. 45 minutes, until it has cooled.
  • Using a sieve, strain the mixture. Discard the leaves.
  • Store the basil simple syrup mixture in a jar in your fridge. It can be kept up to one week; other than for this cocktail recipe, it makes a great addition to hot tea and as a substitute for honey or maple syrup. (Basil simple syrup drizzled over strawberries & buttermilk pancakes is a sinfully delicious breakfast, you must try it. The basil simple syrup also tastes great in homemade granola.)

#5 - Don't present problems without solutions - Don't be the person who just complains all the time about every little thing. If you want to present a problem, think about presenting it along side of a solution as well. If you present an option for how said problem can be fixed, you're more likely to be heard.

shutterstock.com
#4 - Own your mistakes and move on - I fuck up all the time. I'm cool with that. If you make a mistake, don't waste any time trying to hide it. Own it, fix it if you can, and move on. Plain and simple.

#3 - Don't make your co-workers your surrogate family - No matter who you are or what you think, a work/life balance is necessary. When you start making your co-workers your new best friends and family it's increasingly harder to find this balance. I'm not saying don't be friends, but make sure to have a life outside of the office.

#2 - If you hate it, don't make it a career - Work, jobs, and careers take up a significant part of our lives. Why would you want to spend this significant amount of time doing something you can't stand doing? If you're in a bind or just need to pay the bills, by all means, do what you have to do, but don't make a career about it. Your sanity will thank you.

#1 - Find what you love and go for it - and don't let anyone decide what you love but yourself - There is nothing more gratifying then making money by doing things that you love to do. Don't let anyone tell you about yourself - you know what you like - Go for it.

Another Friday, and another episode of The Vodka Press podcast released - time to celebrate with some cocktails.

During EP #06, I recommended the Vesper and one of our own concoctions, the Cinematic Climactic.

Tabascoman77 [CC-BY-SA-3.0], via Wikimedia Commons
The Vesper (martini) is a sophisticated drink, one that I often order when I'm at formal events. It's sexier - and tastier - than just a glass of champagne or white wine, don't you agree?

Vesper (according to iba-world.com)
  • 6 cl Gin
  • 1.5 cl Vodka
  • 0.75 cl Lillet Blonde
  • Lemon twist (garnish)

After watching Starsuckers and This Film is Not Yet Rated in preparation for EP #06, I had a fire in my belly - the excellent (and disturbing) points those films brought up about the entertainment industry, ah my mind was racing! So I channeled that energy into whipping up this week's cocktail, the Cinematic Climactic.

Cinematic Climactic

I'm not the only one who likes a good cocktail. Our pal Laura, aka Laureliz, recommends The Trash Can. As she so eloquently puts it, "Hans Garden on Washington St. in Haverhill, MA makes an infamous drink called The Trash Can. Energy, strong liquor yet a smooth gulp (don’t make it dirty!) makes this a go-to drink in downtown on a Friday night."

The Trash Can
  • 1/2 oz gin
  • 1/2 oz light rum
  • 1/2 oz vodka
  • 1/2 oz peach schnapps
  • 1/2 oz Blue Curacao liqueur
  • 1/2 oz triple sec
  • 1 can Red Bull® energy drink

Have you ever been watching a movie and wondered how and when you've started rooting for someone who clearly lacks moral fiber? Here's a list of five tricks used in cinema to make sure you're rooting for the guy you're supposed to.

#5 - Give them a dog - How can you not help but sympathize with someone who has a furry little buddy. The truth is that people seem to have more of an attachment to animals than they do humans so the pairing only seems obvious.

#4 - Make them inferior - This is especially true in sports movies. The well seasoned and highly skilled team is always "evil." People love an underdog story. If they suck at first - chances are you're going to be rooting them on.

#3 -Make them American, even if America hasn't even existed yet - It doesn't matter if it's 450 BC. This trick plays to everyone's patriotic nature..but definitely not everyone's knowledge of history.

#2 - Excuse violent behavior with an emotional back story - The more we know about a person, the more apt we are to excuse their behavior (even if the villain in the movie is doing exactly the same things).

#1 - If they are a villain, make them sophisticated - No one is going to be rooting for the cracked out male who deals meth to school children. Unless you give him a taste for fine wines, classical music, a decent IQ, some nice threads, and a little bit of poise and grace...and BINGO. it's that easy.

What better way to kick off the weekend - and the release of a sexy episode of The Vodka Press - than to indulge in some orgasmic cocktails?

During EP #05, I recommended the Screaming Orgasm and one of our own concoctions, the Full Body Orgasm.

There are many variations of the Screaming Orgasm, but the one we prefer has the following ingredients:

Screaming Orgasm (according to 1001cocktails.com)

Screaming Orgasms are great, but nothing beats a Full Body Orgasm. It'll make your toes curl and your eyes roll back in your head, in sublime ecstasy.

We've all seen them around. You pick up your favorite magazine just for gals' and it's filled with fun sex tips you can't wait to try out when your man gets home.

Here's the rub:

There are tons of sex tips that just don't make sense, sound like they hurt, or are just generally going to lead to disaster.

Here's a quick five:

5. "Be especially careful if he is neat, well groomed, or spending a lot of time at the gym, he's probably getting it from somewhere else." (Yes, because being neat, well presented, and working on your fitness MUST mean he's cheating on you. Please, tell me.....what does it mean when he remembers my birthday, takes me out to dinner, or opens a door for me? Does that mean his Mother doesn't like me?)

4. "Give him a beer facial - the combination of the egg whites and yeast in hops hydrates and improves skin elasticity...but don't tell him this, just say "my lips can't resist your delicious beer flavored face.". (Because there's nothing sexier than a secret facial at the price of making yourself look like a beer crazed crazy. If you threw beer in my face, I'd be all set. And not in the good way.)

3. "Take your favorite desserts to bed, like a can of whipped cream or chocolate sauce. (Have you ever actually tried this? The smell whipped cream makes when mixed with unspeakable acts should probably be on a list with other weapons of mass destruction. Seriously, it's disgusting. Not to mention the clean up sucks.)

2. "Ask him what songs he listened to in Junior High and play them during a hookup. It will take him back to that time when he was in an almost permanent state of horniness triggering his primal urges. (Am I the only one who thinks most guys don't need help in the horniness department? Why don't you just ask him if his 13 year old nephew is single while you're feeling particularly pedophilia-like.)

1."Sprinkle pepper under his nose right before he climaxes. Sneezing can feel similar to an orgasm and amplify the feel good effects." (If you somehow manage to remember to bring pepper to bed with you, then manage to simultaneously get him to climax while sprinkling just the right amount of pepper under his nose, then you are a goddamn superhero and I want to be friends with you.)

As a chaser to Episode #05 Sex (The Other Kind of Getting Physical), Zoe Grimm interviewed KC, an indie porn director, via Skype chat. (Notes from Zoe: Skype audio sucks! Apologies. Also, the article we discussed during the interview was "Would You Sleep With a Porn Star? No, Like, For Real?" on XoJane.com.)

Finding a cocktail that's kind to your waist - and still tastes good - can be a challenge. I had my work cut out for me, but the drinks I picked for this week are perfect (in a fashion).

During EP#04, I recommended the Sea Breeze and one of our own concoctions, the Fit & Fine Female.

The Sea Breeze is a gem at just under 200 calories, it manages to be both light and satisfying. (And, in my opinion, it tastes better than a higher calorie Cosmopolitan.)

Sea Breeze (according to the IBA site)
  •  4 cl Vodka
  • 12 cl Cranberry juice
  • 3 cl Grapefruit juice

If you're in the mood to be a little naughty, the Fit & Fine Female is just the drink for you. Park farther away from the store's door, do some heavy-lifting while shopping, and reward yourself afterwards with this delicious cocktail.

Fit & Fine Female
  • 1 ½ part Stoli Sticki vodka
  • 1 part orange juice (made from thawed frozen concentrate + water)
  • garnish with orange zest
  • *rim the glass w/ finely crushed pecan sandies or graham crackers
*Note: In a food processor, crush cookies until they resemble a fine powder. Pour the cookie powder into a saucer or flat plate. Moisten the rim of the glass with a wedge of lemon. Hold the glass by the stem and dip it into the cookie powder at an angle, rotating until you get the entire outer rim covered. Then pour the cocktail mixture in and enjoy!
