A Very Vodka Holiday: TVP's Favorite Things of 2013

2013 is in the home stretch and while you're checking off your holiday shopping lists and writing your letters to Santa, we thought we would share some of our favorite things that we've discovered over the past year. From food to beauty products to books to websites and magazines, check out the stuff that the ladies of TVP are calling "Our Favorite Things: 2013."

Karly Kingsley:

Saveur Magazine: What makes this a great magazine is that it’s not solely about shelling out recipes or telling you which product is better than which. Saveur is a magazine for people who “understand the world food first” and places a heavy emphasis on, tradition, celebrating cultures and environments by using the dishes created there. Culture, tradition, and being able to learn about the world has been one of the biggest reasons that I have developed such a passion for food and Saveur nails that concept day after day.

FoodPornDaily: Food Porn Daily is just that: Food Porn. Every day this website features a different dish that is gorgeous to the eyes. It's something that I look forward to on a daily basis not only for sheer entertainment but also for inspiration.

Improv Asylum Boston: My first endeavor at the Improv Asylum happened when I agreed to accompany my sister to an Improv class. I fell in love. Instantly. Improv has changed the way that I look at life and how I interact with people. I know that’s a lofty statement but I challenge you to join a class or see a show and see if you can’t say the same.

If You Have to Cry Go Outside: And Other Things Your Mother Never Told You By: Kelly Cutrone: I read this book earlier in the year and I love it. Kelly Cutrone is a badass woman. This book is full of stories, wisdom, and plenty of advice that is raw and honest. Any woman looking to move forward in her career or life should read this book. A Kelly Cutrone type is the type of mentor any woman would be lucky to have. (And yes, I know that she has published other books since this one - I just love it that much),

Psychology Today: Besides food, the human mind and body has always been something that has fascinated me. I can’t live without my issues of psychology today. It’s also the one magazine that I can reread issues over and over again and never get sick of them. I’m a huge fan of anything that will make you think or help you understand the world better. Psychology Today does just that.

EMS WindPro Women's Touch Screen Gloves: It can get cold in Boston and when I stumbled upon these gloves accidentally, it changed my life. These are gloves that allow you to use your smartphone or touch screen device without having to take your gloves off. It’s easier than ever to text your friends about tonight’s plans without freezing your fingers off at the T-stop.

Farouk Chi Touch Screen Hair Dryer: Apparently I have a thing for touchscreens. I also have thick hair and am limited on time and more often than not, I used to find myself leaving the house with half wet hair because I couldn’t find the time to finish with my hair dryer. This dryer solved those problems. It’s fast, it’s quiet, and you can personalize the settings to fit your hairstyling needs.

Urban Decay Naked2 and Naked3 Eye Shadow Palettes: Urban Decay has been a welcome addition to my makeup bag this year. After being gifted a few of their 24/7 glide on eyeliners I opted to check out their other products and found myself with an instant love connection. The Naked Palettes are amazing. I’m no makeup artist but even I have been able to pull of fabulously sexy looks with the help of these eye shadow palettes. Naked3 is a little bit hard to get right now because it just came out (and also because I’ve been gifting it to everyone) but the 2 and the 3 are something you should really check out.

Wusthof Knives: Working as a personal chef, a good trusty knife is your best friend. I’m partial to the Wusthof brand. I love my knives. Almost as much as my boyfriend, but don’t tell him I said that. If you’re thinking about giving your foodie friend or kitchen obsessed relatives the obligatory Walmart brand set of knives... Don’t. Good knives go a long way in the kitchen. Bad knives are just a waste of money.

Keurig Rivo Cappuccino and Latte System: My life is full of people who are constantly on the go and who also work an extreme amount of hours. I love giving this system as a gift. If Zoe drank caffeine, I’d buy that busy woman one. While I don’t have one for myself (*hint hint) I’ve still managed to put some mileage on a few other’s systems. In the past I’ve been hesitant to use one cup coffee makers as the coffee tends to come out a little weak, but with this system, it’s changed my mind about one cup systems. It’s so easy to use and always perfect.

French Cheeses From Murray’s Cheeses: I’m obsessed with a lot of things. Cheese being one of them. Murray’s cheese is a really great online shop where you can indulge yourself in all things cheese. They have a gift called the French Connection which is a combination of crunchy, nutty, earthy, creamy, and elegant french cheese but I tend to just buy it for myself or for when I know that I’m having people over. Even if you aren’t into cheese you should still check out Murray’s. They have a lot of different things that are great for entertaining, for gifts, or just for yourself.

EH Chocolatier: EH Chocolatier is a small independently owned chocolate and confection company in Somerville, MA. I can’t say enough nice things about them. This little shop is in their second year of their chocolate share. You pay one flat fee and every month you pick up a box of delicious, seasonal, and fresh chocolates. Unfortunately, the chocolate share is only available for local pickup but you can order their other confections on their online store. Try the sipping chocolate and caramel trio box.

Jameson Irish Whiskey: Anyone who knows me knows that I’d be lying if I made a list of my favorite things and left Jameson off. It’s my go to imbibe when I feel the need to indulge (in moderation offffff course.)

Zoe Grimm:

For Your Soul: I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban by Malala Yousafzai: Malala is a brave young woman, and her story is a beautiful one; her wise words (and even the horrors she's overcome) will inspire you. It’s my most favorite book I read this year, I can’t praise it enough. Tip: Just make sure you have a box of tissue nearby. You’re going to need it, trust me.

For Your Information: The UnSlut Project - In case you didn’t know, I’m enamored with The Unslut Project. This wonderful website provides useful resources as well as a safe place for men & women, from all over the world, to share their stories of dealing with “sexual bullying and slut shaming.” Every time I read a new story off the site, my dedication - to connect with others and speak out against such hateful discriminations - is renewed. I’m delighted that The Unslut Project surpassed its kickstarter goal and is working hard on “Slut: A Documentary Film.” Check out www.unslutproject.com, if you haven’t already, and spread the word.

For Your Stomach: Bachman Toasted Sweet Potato Tortilla Chips - It's a mouthful to say, and it's also a mouthful of yummy. These chips taste great as is or paired w/ homemade salsa, melanzana dip, and even tabbouleh. But be warned: they're addictive, it's hard to stop at just one (or eleven) chips!

For Your Feet: Iron Fist Chew Toy Booties - These remind me of our discussions about “The Fox” during Episode 01 of The Vodka Press podcast. They also happen to be 100% vegan leather and hot as hell when paired with a little black dress.

For Your Face: Physicians Formula: Sexy Booster™ Sexy Glow Blush - I have sensitive skin, and many of the popular makeup brands give me a rash. Rashes aren’t sexy. But you know what is sexy? A beautiful glow on your (facial) cheeks, and you can easily get one thanks to Physicians Formula: Sexy Booster™ Sexy Glow Blush. Bonus: This blush has a subtle, delicious strawberries & vanilla cream scent.

For You + Your Lover: Smooch Me, Touch Me, and then Relax Me - Good Vibrations is my favorite sex store. Whether I shop from them online or go to an actual store, I’m never disappointed with whatever I purchase. I’m a big fan of the Smooch Me Lip Lube in Mint Lime, it’s all-natural, vegan, and keeps my lips kissably soft (even while out in the harsh winter weather). Set the mood with Touch Me Massage Oil, it feels luxurious on your (and your lover’s) skin; I usually reach for the Pomegranate Mint, but even the Nude/unscented is a sexy treat. After some sultry kisses, massages, and passionate lovemaking, I recommend soaking in the tub with Relax Me Fizzy Bath Balls in (what else?) Pomegranate Mint; it's perfect for soothing sore muscles and getting in the mood for round two.

For Just The Ladies: PiqueZine - I’m always on the lookout for the next big, sexy thing. Piquezine.com trumps any of the porn I’ve seen this year; it’s a site boasting female-friendly erotica. In Episode 05: Sex (The Other Kind of Getting Physical), I even recommended one story off Piquezine.com during our erotica review segment. As their homepage says, Piquezine.com is "Smart. Sexy. Shameless." What more could a woman want?

For Your iTunes: No Redemption (Official DMC Devil May Cry Soundtrack) - DMC: Devil May Cry is a decent video game. But the soundtrack, oooh - love it! No Redemption (Official DMC Devil May Cry Soundtrack) features the heavy metal/aggrotech stylings of Combichrist. If you or a loved one like to game and don’t already own this soundtrack, to quote the title of a popular Combichrist album: “What the Fuck Is Wrong with You People?

For Your Home: Women Of The DC Universe bust: Zatanna - Look at Zatanna (pictured left). LOOK AT HER. Even if you don’t follow the comic books, how could you resist having this gorgeous superheroine on your desk? Talk about inspiration for your writing! For those of you interested in her story: Zatanna isn’t just another beautiful face, she’s also a kickass sorceress and stage magician; and she's known to speak backwards as she casts her spells. Read more here.

Meet Vlad
For Your Pet: Petco Vampire Plush Toy - I'm a good pet parent, sometimes too good. Whenever a major holiday rolls around, I take my adorable dog to the nearby Petco so he can pick out his gift. Yes, my dog likes to select his own toys; he takes the toy in his mouth and carries it around the store. So we went out tonight to get his Xmas toy, and guess what my dog picks out? Not the cute gingerbread man plush toy or candy cane squeaky bone. No, my dog goes for the lone vampire plush toy no doubt leftover from Halloween. I tried to get him to drop the vampire and select an Xmas appropriate toy, but he wasn't having any of it. So, sigh, we have a new member in my dog's toy gang. (At least it’s cute, right?)

For You Cocktail Lovers: I originally wasn't planning on recommending any drinks on this list but, after seeing the awesome ones my fellow TVP members mentioned, I couldn't resist tossing out one of my own. I love going to Church; not the house of worship, I'm referring to the restaurant/club in Boston. Church serves many delicious drinks, but my favorite is Vanity off the Seven Deadly Sins drink menu. The Vanity cocktail consists of ruby red vodka, orange liqueur, grapefruit, and cava. Imagine my voice as I say the following: Mmmm, soooo good. (Click here to see a pic of Vanity.)

Kit Bangles:

Korres Lip butter in Wild Rose - super moisturizing, epic tint. If nothing else goes on my face before I leave the house it’s this. The line has several colors and a clear option, so if a deep, dark red isn’t your thing there’s a flattering shade for everyone. Pomegranate, a nice peachy coral, is my second favorite. It's available at Sephora and http://www.korresusa.com/default.aspx?page_id=345.

Creative Nonfiction Magazine - edited by Lee Gutkind, “the godfather” of creative nonfiction, CNF Mag brings together essays, magazine writing, interviews with essayists, journalists, editors and publishers who work with CNF for a tour-de-force of great pleasure reading and helpful insights and research on the rapidly growing industry of creative nonfiction.

Forever 21 Leggings - They go with and under everything. they’re form-fitting enough to add a layer under your jeans in winter and opaque enough to make it through a yoga class without worrying about how much down there your downward dog might be showing off.

chowvegan.com
Trader Joe’s veggie thai dumplings and ‘super food quinoa pilaf’ - I may have subsisted entirely on Trader Joe’s frozen foods the first 2 weeks of December. With an orange or an apple thrown in for good measure, of course. The dumplings are awesome even without a dunking sauce - they’ve got a nice kick to ‘em, and if you add some of your favorite hot sauce to the pilaf while it’s steaming you are good to go at any hour.

HuffPost Women - I think ⅘ articles that I’ve been like “Hey! We should read this: discuss” have come from HuffPost Women. Nothing is sacred and nothing is taboo - just like good curious conversation should be.

http://forhereyesonly.tumblr.com - We’ve talked about porn kind of a lot this season, and For Her Eyes Only opened my, um, eyes, to a whole new world of fun sexy sexy-time. There’s a little something for everyone, but as a woman I’m loving seeing how much fun these women are having pleasing and being pleasured. Everyone is having a good time on FHEY. Even, and perhaps especially, when they’ve got cum all over their face.

The Toronto -
cocktailia.com
  • 2 oz rye whiskey
  • 3/4 oz Fernet Branca
  • ¼ oz simple syrup
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • Stir, served up.
These go down like candy, make your belly happy and put a good hearty flush in all the right places.  You can make them with Peychaud’s bitters, too, for a slightly different flavor.

Sweatand Soul Yoga Studio: Every class is a bit different but there is always one sure thing:  you will sweat. You will also feel amazing when you leave. For a long time I always thought of myself as too high strung for yoga. What, lying around and breathing is supposed to count as exercise? Please! I tried Bikram and was not impressed. Skill or fat shaming should not be acceptable in a yoga studio - people are there to push themselves at their own pace. And you really think trying to patent a body position is okay?

Sweat and Soul cranks up the heat in the room, but to an invigorating 80-90 degrees, not a gag-inducing 103. And everyone is encouraged to do what feel right for them on any given day in any given class. I’ve been blown away at how challenging these classes have been, and super impressed with how much better my body feels when I make it at least once a week. Classes are each $10 drop in, and there are monthly challenges (attend at least one class every day for a month) for a flat rate that more than gets your money’s worth.
